Reactions to Medications Send Over 700,000 Americans to Emergancy Rooms Each Year

As the number of medications taken by Americans has increased exponentially sense this article was written, this number of 700,000 has increased as well, and become on of the leading causes of death in our society.  When will we wake up to the dangers of these drugs and demand something better? We all know the true motivation of the drug companies.

A 2 year study published in the October 18, 2006 issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association, (JAMA), found that during the study period, 21,298 adverse drug event cases were reported in the sampling group. Transposed nationally, the researchers estimate that 701,547 individuals suffered adverse drug reactions serious enough to require hospitalization.

The study was developed by the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the Food and Drug Administration and the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission. It looked at 63 hospitals in 2004 and 2005. The study found that people over 65 were most at risk and that a handful of drugs appear to produce a disproportionately high amount of adverse effects requiring emergency room visits and, in many cases, hospitalization.

Lead author Dr. Daniel Budnitz, a medical epidemiologist at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's National Center for Infectious Diseases, in an interview in an October 17, 2006 Newsweek article was asked if he was surprised at the high number. His response was, "Actually, it is most likely an underestimate. It might just pick up a third of the emergency visits—the number could be much higher. We don't know how much. But we are confident that there were at least 700,000 emergency department visits. Another point to remember is that these are medications that we're giving to patients to help them, and they are experiencing some degree of harm. So some might argue that even one of these events is bad. All drugs have benefits and risks, so it's probably unfair to say that every ER visit is unavoidable. But many of these events, especially the most severe—are due to this handful of drugs that we already knew we need to closely monitor."

In an October 18, 2006 New York Times article, professor Bruce Lambert, who was not involved in the research, and is a professor at the college of pharmacy at the University of Illinois, Chicago, commented, "This is an important study because it reinforces the really substantial risks that there are in everyday use of drugs."

Authors of the study concluded, "Adverse drug events among outpatients that lead to emergency department visits are an important cause of morbidity in the United States, particularly among individuals aged 65 years or older. Ongoing, population-based surveillance can help monitor these events and target prevention strategies."

Ovarian Function and Fertility Improved With Chiropractic - A Case Study

Having fertility problems, before those extremely expensive treatments break the bank, get checked by your Chiropractor.  Often, pelvic imbalance can cause a disruption in normal ovulation. Check out this case study and how this woman's dream of having a child was answered with Chiropractic care.

In interesting case study was published in the July 2006 issue of the peer-reviewed, scientific publication, the Journal of Clinical Chiropractic Pediatrics (JCCP) that reported on a 37 year old woman who was diagnosed with infertility. What is interesting here is that the woman did not seek chiropractic care for her infertility problems, but rather for back pain.

In this documented case, the woman presented herself for chiropractic care due to lower back pain. Her pain had been present for approximately 18 months and was described as sharp pain running down the right leg into the knee. The patient's history revealed that each day she drove between 60 to 90 minutes to work. Once at work the patient spent most of her day seated.

The patient's previous diagnostic reports revealed that she had a past history of endometriosis and that there were other reproductive issues that rendered her ovaries inactive and therefore she was unable to conceive. Her history also showed that she had undergone 4 unsuccessful attempts at in-vitro-fertilization. Additionally, ultrasound showed that her uterus was in a "retroverted" position.

Her chiropractic examination determined the presence of an upper cervical (neck) subluxation in addition to subluxations in the mid and lower spine. Chiropractic care was initiated and a series of specific chiropractic adjustments were given specific to her spinal subluxations.

In this case, the patient noticed relief of back pain after the first visit. Although her driving and job situation did continue to aggravate her pain, there was a continual decrease of these issues. After her fourth month of care the patient reported that she was feeling "great" and was scheduled for a fifth and final attempt at in-vitro-fertilization.

During the in-vitro-fertilization program it was medically discovered that her ovaries were showing activity for the first time on her record, and she had produced two mature eggs. Her medical doctor reported that this was rarely seen in their experience. Shortly after this the patient reported that she was pregnant. She was able to carry the pregnancy to term before giving birth to a healthy baby girl.

Multiple Sclerosis Overcome With Chiropractic

A human interest story appeared in the November 1, 2007 issue of the online magazine "The Vista" that talked about the sickness and recovery from Multiple Sclerosis of James L. Klages, a cornet soloist who was the only person hired in that capacity in the 20th century by "The Presidents' Own" United States Marines.

Klages was one of the country's finest cornet soloists and played for several US presidents. In 1989 he was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis and was told his career was over. Not only was he unable to play the cornet, but as time progressed he was unable to even hold the instrument.

Clint Rohr, a friend of Klages and night manager at the University of Central Oklahoma's world famous "Jazz Lab" had taken lessons from Klages and commented, "He went from being able to play all these cornet solos to not being able to hold the cornet. I remember one day he dropped his cornet because he couldn't feel his hands."

As his condition got worse Klages was not only unable to play music, but was unable to do even the simple things of a daily routine. He recalled, "I couldn't play the piano for 14 years. I couldn't button my clothes, I couldn't tie my shoes, now I can."

During his sickness Klages tried many different medications, none of which helped, and many made his life worse. He recalled, "When I was on steroids I became a foul mouth, violent individual, essentially being drunk from the drug. And I was tired all the time. And then they added a drug to keep me from being tired."
According to the article, Klages finally tried Chiropractic one day after falling down while mowing his lawn. One of his students was a chiropractor and offered to help. Klages noted why he finally decided to see a chiropractor, "I went to see him just to get him off my back."

The article reported that, "The treatment was an instant success." They noted that Klages was relieved of pain immediately, has since weaned himself completely off medication. He continues to receive weekly chiropractic care and now states that he is completely healed and has not taken any form of MS medication for at least five years. He stated, "Several people in town have followed the same treatment I have, and they've had the same results." He now has a desire to tell others about his success and concluded his interview in the article by saying, "As a Christian I read about Jesus healing the lepers…of all ten, only one came back and thanked him. How can I not help other people with MS?"

As a result of Klages miraculous turn around, Sam Karp, a film maker has made a documentary on Klages story that is set to be released shortly. The film titled "Healed" covers the story of James Klages and includes interviews with such notables as Wynston Marsalis. A preview of the upcoming film can be seen at http://www.samkarp.net/healed.html.

Is this really the best we can do?

Is this really the best we can do?

Sad but unfortunately true. Many people quickly find themselves in a "drug rut" which becomes difficult to stop as more drugs are added to take care of the previous drugs side effects.

Article Touts Increased Demand for Chiropractic and Alternative Services

In the Boston Globe appeared an article with the headline, "Demand for Alternative Medicine Rises - Acupuncturists and Chiropractors Increasingly Sought." The article defines all forms of healthcare that are not medical as "Alternative Medicine". Most chiropractors object to the usage of this term since chiropractic care is clearly not medicine. Chiropractic stands as a separate and distinct form of health care.

Despite this terminology issue, the Globe article cited numbers from the National Institutes of Health that calculate that all of "alternative" health care represents a $21 billion-a-year industry. This number should be kept in context. According to figures released in a report on February 7, 2001, the US Census Bureau showed that US health care industry revenues hit $1.01 trillion in 1999. The article also states that surveys show about one-third of Americans visit one of these "alternative" practitioners at least once a year, and that this percentage will increase.

In an attempt to have the medical profession better understand chiropractic and other forms of health care classified as alternative, Tufts University received a five-year, $1.5 million grant last August from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) for finding ways to include alternative medicine as part of the required medical school curriculum. Dr. Mary Lee, dean of educational affairs at Tufts' School of Medicine stated, "The NIH is interested, and so are we, in training traditional doctors to understand complementary medicine."

To meet the increased demand the article cited statistics and projections that showed the current and future numbers of doctors of chiropractic. According to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics, (BLS) in the year 2000, there were an estimated 49,949 chiropractors. The BLS projects that by 2010 that number will grow to 61,654 chiropractors, representing a 23 percent increase. "Since the average growth rate for all occupations over a 10-year period is 15 percent, those figures are significant," said BLS economist Alan Lacey. This projected growth represents the ever-increasing desire on the part of the public to continue to embrace chiropractic care.

Americans Take More Drugs Than Any Other Nation

An  Associated Press (AP) story printed in many publications reports that Americans are the most medicated population in the world. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC), approximately 130 million Americans swallow, inject, inhale, infuse, spray and pat on prescription medications every month.

According to IMS Health, a pharmaceutical consulting company, over the past decade the usage of prescription drugs by Americans has increased by 2/3rds to an incredible 3.5 billion prescriptions per year. Additionally, IMS Health reports that their polling finds that Americans devour even more nonprescription drugs.

The AP story notes that the consequences to this large usage are grave. The article points out that landmark medical studies of the 1990s suggest that well over 125,000 people die from drug reactions and mistakes each year. They note that pharmaceuticals are the fourth-leading national cause of death after heart disease, cancer and stroke.

When placed in perspective, the volume of medication usage in the US becomes more evident. The article notes Americans spent as much on drugs last year as they did for gasoline. According to drug industry consultants the pharmaceutical industry did more than $250 billion worth of sales last year, the vast majority in prescription medications. That translated into $850 for every American.

Dr. Marcia Angell, former editor of the New England Journal of Medicine and author of "The Truth About the Drug Companies", commented, "We are taking way too many drugs for dubious or exaggerated ailments." He continued, "What the drug companies are doing now is promoting drugs for long-term use to essentially healthy people. Why? Because it's the biggest market."

Chiropractic Life-Changing Success Story Documented

Appearing in the peer-reviewed Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics, was a documented case study of a life changing case. The subject of the study was a previously healthy 17 year old who was involved in high school sports.

On one particular occasion he was competing as a pole vaulter in a high school track meet when he had an accident in which he landed on his head from a height of 10 feet.

Immediately following the accident, the young man noticed the onset of neck pain focused at the base of his skull. In addition he started suffering from back pain, daily headaches, and migraine headaches approximately 3 times per week. He described his pain as an "unbearable everyday occurrence." Additionally, several days after the accident he began experiencing "blackouts," which were later diagnosed as petit mal seizures. These seizures continued to increase until he was experiencing them 4 times per day.

Things continued to get worse for the young man as during the first 6 months following the accident, he started experiencing the onset of depression. He described a complete loss of appetite, extreme lethargy, a lack of concern for himself, and an extremely erratic sleep cycle that often left him awake for several days followed by periods of 14 to 18 hours of sleep.

The patient and his mother reported that he consulted with approximately 24 practitioners during this time. Prescribed medications and therapies did not alleviate or reduce symptoms. To alleviate his pain and depression, he started using illegal drugs in an attempt to "make himself feel better." After becoming addicted, his parents checked him into a drug rehabilitation program, which he completed.

It was after this long and horrifying 6 year period, that this young man sought chiropractic care from the chiropractor who authored the published study. An examination was performed and it was determined that the young man was suffering due to a subluxation in the upper neck. A course of corrective adjustments was begun to correct the subluxation and reduce nerve pressure.

The results as reported in the Journal was nothing short of life changing for the young man. After 1 month of care, the patient reported an absence of seizures and manic episodes and improved sleep patterns. After 4 months of care, seizures and manic episodes remained absent and migraine headaches were reduced from 3 per week to 2 per month. After 7 months of care, the patient reported the complete absence of symptoms. And eighteen months later, the patient remains asymptomatic. Needless to say, his life was changed!

Chiropractic Care For Women Offers Many Benefits

Chiropractic wellness programs are particularly well-suited to the special needs of pregnant women, new mothers, women who are overweight, who are in stressful situations, and others who need to protect and strengthen their bones, nerves, joints, muscles and overall health.
Today’s modern woman has become much more knowledgeable in diet, nutrition, weight loss, exercise, sports and physical activity, and methods for maintaining wellness and general fitness - about which chiropractors have considerable expertise that they are eager to share. Chiropractic wellness programs are particularly well-suited to the special needs of pregnant women, new mothers, women who are overweight, who are in stressful situations, and others who need to protect and strengthen their bones, nerves, joints, muscles and overall health.

Millions of women rely on chiropractors because of the caring interaction that develops between patient and doctor and because of chiropractic’s effective combination of expert care, effective spinal adjustments, exercise and nutritional guidance, and lifestyle counseling.

Chiropractic offers demonstrated relief for many of the specific health challenges that affect women based on their female anatomy and the fact that the female body is designed to be able to bear children. Pregnancy and the menstrual cycle are centrally important health matters for women. Being pregnant, preparing for pregnancy, and recovering from childbirth are just some of the uniquely female issues. Pain during the menstrual period (dysmenorrhea), premenstrual syndrome (PMS), and chronic pelvic pain are among the distressing conditions which disrupt the otherwise healthy lives of many women.

Older women are much more likely than men to develop Alzheimer’s disease (which burdens the afflicted with near-total memory loss and reduced mental functioning) and osteoporosis (in which the bones become weak, brittle, and porous; the posture stooped with the shoulders rounded). These are just two of the problems of aging that women must be aware of and can take steps to prevent.

Women may get headaches during menstrual periods and pregnancy, as well as under ordinary circumstances. Women are more likely to be bothered enough by headache pain to seek a way to overcome it. When the bones of the spine lose their normal position or motion, the sensitive nerves and blood vessels to the head become compromised. When these delicate tissues are stretched or irritated, they can produce certain types of headaches. While aspirin or other medications may cover up the symptoms, they do not really correct the cause of the headache.

Similarly, women are often victims of osteoarthritis (degenerative joint disease) and have a 200 to 300 percent greater chance than men of suffering rheumatoid arthritis.

Because the nervous system controls and coordinates all of the different functions of your body, any disruption in nerve communication to your organs and body tissues will result in abnormal function. Chiropractors help restore normal nerve function and communication, thereby allowing your body to work normally and naturally.

The result is often a reduction in pain and inflammation, as well as prevention of further deterioration. Research has also demonstrated that arthritic changes begin in the spinal joints in as few as three days after a joint becomes fixated. Relief from pain and prevention of further deterioration are among the many “side effects” of regular chiropractic care.

Focus your mind consistently on the things of this world you want, or want to accomplish, and you will see them materialize in your life.

Two Sodas a Week Nearly Doubles Risk of Pancreatic Cancer

A 14-year study of 60,000 people in Singapore found that those who consume two or more sweetened soft drinks per week have an 87 percent higher risk of pancreatic cancer.

The biggest single source of calories in America is not pizza or burgers, but soft drinks. Soft drinks containing High Fructose Corn Syrup (HFCS) supply just over 7% of all the calories consumed in the U.S. each year. The consumption of HFCS has increased by more than 1000% between 1970 and 1990, far exceeding the changes in intake of any other food or food group.

A possibly toxic chemical sugar alternative made from genetically modified, government subsidized corn is the leading staple of the American diet.

Aside from the obvious contribution to obesity, new research is uncovering the direct health consequences of America’s addiction to chemically sweetened soft drinks.

A 14-year study of 60,000 people in Singapore found that those who consume two or more sweetened soft drinks per week have an 87 percent higher risk of pancreatic cancer.

Published in the journal Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers & Prevention, the study was led by Mark Pereira of the University of Minnesota who said, "The high levels of sugar in soft drinks may be increasing the level of insulin in the body, which we think contributes to pancreatic cancer cell growth."

Nearly 38,000 people are diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in the United States each year, and over 34,000 die from the disease each year. This research points to what may be the common culprit of all those preventable deaths: Sugary soft drink consumption.

The sweetener used in most beverages, HFCS, is linked to both diabetes and obesity. The phosphoric acid found in soft drinks is highly acidic, stripping minerals from bones and promoting osteoporosis. At the same time, soft drinks can cause kidney stones, too.

For those who consume diet sodas, the health risks may be even worse: Aspartame causes neurological side effects that include blindness, headaches and impaired cognitive function.

The beverage industry, of course, denies any links between soda consumption and negative health effects. It wants consumers to naively believe that liquid sugar, phosphoric acid and pressurized carbon dioxide are all good for you.

Of course none of this is news to our nation’s chiropractors. Since 1927, textbooks used to educate chiropractors have stated flatly, “Anything made or prepared artificially and then introduced into the body…is a poison. Foods, air and water, when they have been “doctored” are poisons.”

For rational, truthful information on what it takes to truly achieve health and well-being, make an appointment to see your neighborhood chiropractor today.

ADHD Drugs Increase Poor School Performance Ten-Fold
Those consistently using medication had significantly higher blood pressure at age 14 than children who had never taken drugs.
Children diagnosed with ADHD who use prescription drugs to manage their condition are 10 times more likely to perform poorly at school than ADHD kids who avoid medication, a new report reveals.

The report also finds stimulant drugs such as Ritalin and dexamphetamine make no significant difference to the level of depression, self-perception and social functioning of a 14-year-old with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.

Those consistently using medication had significantly higher blood pressure at age 14 than children who had never taken drugs, a side-effect that could increase the risk of heart attack and stroke even into adulthood.

The report's co-author, Lou Landau, said the world-first study into the long-term effects of stimulant medication on children with ADHD, to be published today, showed "drugs over the long term don't have an impact on improving performance".

"They don't improve outcomes for those with ADHD, they make no difference to levels of depression, social functioning and self-perception, and for those on medication it is 10 times as likely that classroom performance will be below average," he said.

Professor Landau, principal medical adviser to the West Australian Department of Health, which funded the research, said that was not to say drugs should never be used to treat ADHD. "There may be some children for whom the need to manage the condition in the short term will outweigh the long-term effects."

The report is groundbreaking because it uses data from the Raine Study, which has been tracking the progress of more than 2800 families for two decades. Parents of the 131 children diagnosed with ADHD under the study have been providing information since the children were born. The outcomes were measured when the children were 14 years old.

West Australian Mental Health Minister Graham Jacobs said he was cautious about the study because of its relatively small sample size, but it "did call into question the anecdotal evidence from when I was a country GP that medication improved a child's concentration so they learned better".

"I think parents are starting to look at the issue more closely," he said. "In WA, we were one of the higher ADHD medication prescribers, but it started to change in the last 12 to 18 months."

West Australian Labor MP Martin Whitely, a longtime campaigner against ADHD medication, welcomed the report. "The ADHD industry's claim that without medication ADHD children risk academic failure has been shown to be complete bull," he said. "It's not just that ADHD drugs don't improve long-term school performance, they drag kids down. Parents will be furious they've been conned into giving their children taxpayer-subsidized amphetamines. No responsible parent would knowingly increase their child's chances of academic failure."

Many parents find relief from ADHD symptoms though safe, gentle, effective chiropractic care. This recent news report documents one family's success with chiropractic care:

Chiropractic Provides Relief from Major Depression

46-year old man overcame his major depression and increased his quality of life after chiropractic care.

A case study published in the Journal of Vertebral Subluxation Research credits regular chiropractic care with helping a 46-year old man overcome his major depression and increase his quality of life. The study documents the important role chiropractic care can play in the management of depressions.

More than 15 million American adults are diagnosed with mood disorders every year, which include major depression, Dysthymia and Bipolar Disorder. The disease is usually treated with antidepressants, according to the study, but the quality of life of people who are clinically depressed is subdued by the medications’ many unwanted side effects.

In this particular study, a 46-year old man suffered from major depression and was taking an antidepressant with unwanted side effects, such as decrease in his sex drive, dizziness, muscle weakness and insomnia. A chiropractic evaluation revealed that he had suffered physical trauma in the past, which led to vertebral subluxations. A subluxation is a condition in which the body is unable to function properly because of interferences with the nervous system, and the condition may be corrected with chiropractic adjustments.

The patient had a total of 34 adjustments done on various parts of his spine over a period of 11 months. After the first visit, his dizziness subsided, and he experienced a decrease in lower back and neck pain. After three visits, he felt less anxious and fatigued and reported an increase in muscle strength. Over time, his depression significantly improved, and he was eating healthier.

Previous studies have shown a correlation between injury or trauma to the spine and the onset of social disorders, in addition to biochemical changes in the brain.
A healthy spine is vital to your health, to your overall state of well being and thus to your quality of life.
