Chiropractic Changes the Way the Brain Processes Information

Many of us have experienced days when we just can't seem to process the information we need understand as easily as we can on other days.  What is the problem?  New research has shown it can be caused by a disconnect between the Brain/Body communication pathway known as the Central Nervous System.  This disconnect in Chiropractic is called a Subluxation and is known by Chiropractors as root cause of almost all disease processes in the human body.  Check out this study by a world renowned research doctor on the effects of Chiropractic adjustments and Brain function.   Absolutely amazing!!

Research published in the November-December issue of the Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics and reported on by Scoop Health from New Zealand on November 23, 2007, shows how chiropractic helps affect brain and nerve system function. An excited release on the research by the New Zealand Chiropractors Association states, "Ground-breaking research has, for the first time, identified the actual changes that occur in the body, the nervous system and the brain during chiropractic spinal adjustments."

The study demonstrates that chiropractic care sends signals to the brain that change the way the brain controls muscles. Award-winning Auckland researcher, Dr. Heidi Haavik-Taylor commented, "The process of a spinal adjustment is like rebooting a computer. The signals that these adjustments send to the brain, via the nervous system, reset muscle behavior patterns." She went on to explain how this can have a broad effect on a person's health by saying, "By stimulating the nervous system we can improve the function of the whole body. This is something that chiropractors and their patients have known for years; and now we have some scientific evidence to prove it."

According to the Scoop Health article, Dr. Haavik-Taylor has spent the last seven years researching the effects of chiropractic adjustments on the nervous system. On this new research, Dr. Haavik-Taylor was able to measure how brain waves are altered before and after spinal adjustments. She reported, "This is the first time that anyone has used EEGs to prove that there are definite changes to the way the brain processes information after chiropractic care."

Dr. James Burt, President of the New Zealand Chiropractors Association, touted Dr. Haavik-Taylor's breakthrough research by noting, "Heidi's work is ground-breaking on an international level by proving that chiropractic adjustments do alter and benefit the nervous system."

Chiropractic Adjustments for Children with Acute Otitis Media

Has your Child suffered from chronic Ear Infections?  Have you tried several bouts of antibiotics only to see the condition continue to return or not even effect the condition?  Have you tried surgery (sometimes multiple times) with putting tubes in the ear drums to drain the fluid without results?   I have personally seen the miracle of Chiropractic Adjustments on Ear Infections with my own patients, many times in as few as 2-3 adjustments.  Check out the results of this study showing the incredible effects of Chiropractic Care for this condition.

A recent study published in the March 29, 2004 peer reviewed journal, The Journal of Vertebral Subluxation Research, (JVSR), showed that chiropractic adjustments had a positive effect on children with acute ear infections. In the study 21 children were examined. All these children showed acute inflammation in the inner ear with a red and bulging tympanic membrane accompanied by an increased mean oral temperature of over 100 degrees F.

The results of the study showed that after the chiropractic adjustments, the red and bulging tympanic membrane returned to normal in 95% of the children and a decrease in average oral temperature to 98.6 degrees F.

A similar story also appeared on the website of the television station, WIS TV news on March 30, 2004. That story featured a four year old girl Taylor, who went to see a chiropractor for ear infections. According to her mother Taylor had been suffering with about eight ear infections a year. Her mother noted that after two chiropractic adjustments, she hasn't had one ear infection in nine months, "This has been a big great help for us."

The news report ended with the following, "Besides ear infections another study found chiropractic care helps babies with colic. The study reports children cried two hours less after having adjustments than those who received the standard drug treatment."

Case Study Shows Chiropractic Benefit for Spinal Stenosis

Spinal Stenosis is a condition of narrowing of the central canal of the spine causing compression of the spinal cord.  It has several causes, all of which reduce the capacity of the central nervous system to function.  Since this system controls and coordinates every single function in the human body it is important to always ensure this system functions at its absolute best.  Most of the conditions that cause Spinal Stenosis can be helped, or eliminated with Chiropractic care.  This case study explains how one man found the help he was searching for.

In the May 2001 issue of the Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics (JMPT) is a case report of how chiropractic helped a patient with Spinal Stenosis. In this study a 78-year-old man had low back pain and severe bilateral leg pains. Lumbar spinal stenosis (LSS) is a condition resulting in narrowing of the spinal canal and pressure on the spinal cord and/or nerve roots. Degenerative changes are also common. The patient commonly has chronic low back pain and unilateral or bilateral leg symptoms.

The patient in this study was a 78-year-old man with acquired degenerative Lumbar Spinal Stenosis. The onset was slow and progressive with increasing low back pain of 2 years' duration and progressively worsening bilateral anterior leg pain of 4 months' duration. The patient described an "achy low back" pain with a belt-line distribution and an "electric," "sharp," and "crampy" pain along the front of the lower leg. The MRI study of his lower back reveled a narrowing of the spinal canal.

In this case the man underwent an initial course of chiropractic care for a two week period during which significant relief was noted by the patient. The conclusion of the case report demonstrates successful care of a patient with symptoms either caused by or complicated by central spinal cord stenosis.

Case Study of a Patient with Chronic Migraine Headaches

Have Migraine Headaches caused you or a loved one loss in your quality of life?  Have they caused you to stop doing a favorite activity?  Research has proven that regular Chiropractic care can reduce, and in some instances eliminate, this debilitating  condition.  Check out this study of one woman's severe case and the amazing result she achieved without the use and side effects of heavy medication.

From the August 3, 2003 issue of the peer-reviewed scientific journal, the Journal of Vertebral Subluxation Research, comes a case study of a 35-year-old female who presented with chronic daily tension and migraine headaches. The journal article followed a patient's history of headaches.

A professional ice skater, sustained a concussion by hitting her head against the ice at age 23. Prior to the accident, she had no health problems or headaches. Following the concussion, tension and migraine headaches started. These symptoms persisted over the next twelve years, during which time the patient utilized daily pain medications.

At age 35 the woman started chiropractic care. Initial examination revealed presence of subluxations in her neck causing nerve interference. Chiropractic adjustments were then begun. The results for this patient were life changing. Evaluation of the patient's condition occurred by doctor's observation, patient's subjective description of symptoms, and thermographic scans. The results showed that all headaches were gone following three months of care. At the conclusion of her case at one year, all symptoms remained absent.

Subluxations, How dangerous Are They?

What you don't know can hurt you

Anyone who has been a patient of ours has probably heard the term "subluxation". This is not, however, a word that most people understand or comprehend. When you hear the word "cancer", there is an instant vision of a very serious and possibly life threatening disease. When you hear the word "AIDS", you think of a terminal condition with a person suffering with no hope of survival. But what do you think of when you hear the word "subluxation"?

If you are like many people, you probably have trouble even pronouncing the word. Then after you think about it, you probably still do not know just what to think. The fact is that most people do not have even the slightest idea of just what a subluxation is or how dangerous it can be.

A few generations ago, the people of that time probably never heard the word "cavity". But more than likely they all knew of the end results of cavities called "tooth aches". Only after years of public education by the dentists, did people come to understand just what a cavity really was. The same can be said for subluxations. Most people are very familiar with the end results of subluxations, but most of them do not realize that a subluxation had anything to do with that end result.

The reason it is easier to understand cavities rather than subluxations is because it is easier to see the end results of a cavity than the end results of a subluxation. Most people know that the end result of a cavity is a tooth ache or possibly even tooth loss. But with subluxations, a simple connection is not possible. This is due to the fact that a subluxation affects your nerve system function which is a much more complex situation than a cavity on a tooth.

For this reason we often refer to subluxations as the fundamental underlying "cause" of your problems. The difficult thing to understand is that subluxations, unlike cavities in your teeth, cause different problems in different people. In fact no two people with subluxation will have the same end results. It is also nearly impossible to predict what types of health problems a person will get from the subluxations they have. But one thing is for sure, subluxations will create a health problem somewhere, sometime

If you look in any anatomy book to find out how the body functions, you will see an explanation like this; "The brain controls and coordinates all the functions of the body." This basically means that everything you do, everything your body does, whether you know about it or not is controlled by your brain. The signals from your brain are transmitted over your nerves to every part of your body. In order for your body to function properly these signals from the brain must get to the various parts of your body without any interference, alteration, or change. If some form of interference does occur along the pathway from the brain to the body part, that part cannot function properly and some sort of health problem will result. It may not show up immediately, but eventually it shows up.

The most common cause of interference to nerve signals is known as a subluxation. A subluxation is when one or more of the bones in your spine move out of position and causes pressure or irritation on a nerve or nerves and therefore interferes with proper nerve messages.

It is our job as chiropractors to find these subluxations and correct or reduce them as much as possible. So, "Subluxations, how dangerous are they?" Answer this for yourself by keeping in mind how important your nervous system is. Now ask yourself the question, "How important is it to my health to have my nervous system functioning without interference?"

Some Important Thoughts on Children and Chiropractic

I am often asked when  kids should be checked by a Chiropractor and is it safe for children.  Research has shown that the answers to these questions is undisputed.  Check them "immediately" and "yes", it is the safest care available!

  • How early should children be adjusted?
  • Is it safe?
  • Aren't their bones still soft?
  • Why do they need adjustments?
  • What if they cry?
  • How can we afford it?
All of these questions and more go through the minds of parents who are considering chiropractic care for their kids. Some parents are hesitant about getting their children adjusted even though they are under care themselves.
Our kids are so special to us that sometimes, in an effort to protect them, we become overprotective and deprive them of necessary and valuable experiences.
If chiropractic care is necessary to your good health and for reaching your full potential in life as an adult, then it logically follows that it is even more necessary for a child!
After all, they have nerve systems that control and coordinate all of their body functions just as you do. And, just like you, they can get subluxations that will interfere with the full outward expression of their Life force.
The only difference is that they still have an entire lifetime ahead of them in which to manifest the results of what they do today.

It's Never Too Soon

Subluxations can occur at any time. The first one may very well have occurred at your baby's birth. That is why parents who understand the importance of being subluxation-free have their newborns examined by their chiropractor as soon after birth as possible.
By correcting subluxations at an early age, the damage that inevitably comes from functioning at less than optimal levels can be prevented. The longer a subluxation is present, the greater the damage. In addition, the longer a subluxation is present, the longer your child's body will continue to "reproduce itself" (i.e., grow) in the wrong way!
"As the twig is bent, so grows the tree!"
Many people who come into a chiropractor's office for the first time as adults would have had far greater potential for regaining their health if they had received regular chiropractic care as children.

Kids Make Great Patients!

Adjusting a child is not a difficult procedure. In fact, in most cases, a child's spine is much easier to adjust than an adult's. They have not had the long-standing subluxations, their muscles are usually not as tense and they are usually more relaxed in general than adults.
Not only are kids easier to adjust, but also in most cases, they hold their adjustments for longer periods of time and their corrective adjustment plans are almost always significantly shorter than the average adult. However, with the falls, accidents and the generally active lives most kids experience, regular check-ups are vital.

It's Worth The Effort

Chiropractic adjustments are generally painless. Children may, on the first visit or two, be somewhat reluctant. However, they rarely hesitate to get on the table to be adjusted, especially when they see that visiting the chiropractor is a family affair. When they see Mom, Dad and their brothers and sisters getting adjusted, they are usually more than willing to be checked for subluxations too.
We will work with you so that your children will become accustomed to their adjustments. In fact, in a very short period of time, most kids really look forward to their regular chiropractic visits.
Those children that are reluctant at first should be lovingly told that they must be adjusted and why it is so important (to keep their Power on!). As parents, we realize that our children are not going to like or enjoy everything that is good for them. Spinach is not enjoyable for most kids, and naps aren't much fun either.
Chiropractic adjustments are vital to their good health, and the few tears that may occur on the first visit (usually because of fear of the unknown), are well worth the benefits to our precious little ones.
Obviously, children who are adjusted regularly from infancy think of their visits to the chiropractor as a regular part of their lives and are not the least bit hesitant to climb onto the adjusting table.

Chiropractic Care is Vital to Your Child's Health and Life!

Lastly, it is of great importance that parents not think of adjustments for their children as "something they might as well do since their kids have come along to the office with them anyway." Chiropractic care for your children is vital to their health and is an absolute necessity to their development and for actualization of their full potential in every area of life.
We have a Family Plan that makes it affordable for most families to receive the care they need. The money saved on treatments for illness is often enough to convince most parents of the benefits of family care. But, the peace of mind that comes from knowing that you have provided your children with the best possible chance to perform at their best is the greatest benefit of all!

Study Proves Chiropractic Helps Sudden and Painful Low Back Pain

While Chiropractic doesn't treat pain, but by treating the cause of the pain, Chiropractic care can have dramatic results for relief.

A study published in the February 2007 issue of the scientific periodical, The Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics, (JMPT) shows some amazing results for patients with sudden painful lower back pain with chiropractic care. The study was conducted at the Department of Orthopedics, Central Hospital of Sogn and Fjordane, Førde, Norway. The study was initiated by the hospital and with full support of the staff.
In this study 44 consecutive patients who experienced sudden and painful low back pain caused by lumbar flexion and rotation were studied. None of the patients had a history of violent trauma related to their problem. Examinations by orthopedic surgeons were performed on the patients and revealed no underlying pathologies in any of the patients in the study. Additionally orthopedic x-rays, computerized tomography, and magnetic resonance imaging findings were all normal from a medical standpoint.

Then an examination was performed by a Doctor of Chiropractic which indicated that the patients had what the study termed "lumbopelvic fixation" (subluxation). Based upon the chiropractic examination 33 patients began chiropractic care in the chiropractor's clinic, whereas 11 who could not be transported were initially cared for by the chiropractor in the hospital.

In this study mean follow-up for the patients was 2 years. The results showed that all but 2 of those in the study were able to return to work. Additionally, the period of sick leave among the patients was reduced by two thirds as compared with time lost with conventional medical treatment. According to the study, the normal loss of time from work for these types of patients under medical care only was 72 days. The patients in this study with the addition of chiropractic care were able to return to work in 21.1 days on average
.
In their conclusion the authors noted the uniqueness of the study, and the benefits for healthcare systems in general. They stated, "To our knowledge, this is the first report on the work of a chiropractor participating within an orthopedic department of a Norwegian hospital as initiated by the hospital and with full support of the staff. The results support the initiative of the Norwegian government to increase reference to chiropractors in treating patients with neuromusculoskeletal dysfunctions. Based on our experience, we believe that the inclusion of chiropractors within hospital orthopedic departments is feasible and provides a patient care resource that may benefit not only the patients but also the department as a whole."

Study Finds Link to Why Chiropractic Care Helps Blood Pressure

Do You have Chronic High Blood Pressure? Chiropractic care has shown to have amazing drug free results. Check out this article explaining why.

Several news stories reported on a study performed at the University of Leeds in England, and published in the August 1, 2007 issue of the Journal of Neuroscience, that showed links between neck muscles and the brain and that this link plays a crucial role in controlling blood pressure.

One report by UPI on August 2, 2007 starts off by stating, "A University of Leeds chance discovery in a British laboratory shows why a chiropractic adjustment for a pain in the neck may do wonders for blood pressure." This article quotes study leader Professor Jim Deuchars who notes that his finding found pathways between the neck and the brain and shows how the neck muscles could play an important role in controlling blood pressure, and why chiropractic care works so well with blood pressure. He states, "By identifying the pathways we can see why these treatments might work and it could also explain why some people suffering whiplash injuries may experience a change in their blood pressure."

Another article appearing on Scenta by the Engineering and Technology Board on August 2, 2007 further quoted Professor Jim Deuchars, "Reports from chiropractic journals say that manipulating the neck region helps to reduce blood pressure in some people. By identifying the pathways we can see why these treatments might work and it could also explain why some people suffering whiplash injuries may experience a change in their blood pressure."

As he mentions in the article, Professor Deuchars notes that the Leeds study further corroborates the work done at the Hypertension Center at the University of Chicago Medical Center and published in the March 2, 2007 issue of the Journal of Human Hypertension. In that previous study 25 people in the study group receiving the chiropractic adjustments all showed a significant reduction in blood pressure compared with groups in the study that did not get chiropractic adjustments.

Chiropractic Care for Children, When and Why

Want to stay healthy and give you and your family the best opportunity maximized living? Get regular Chiropractic Check-ups.

There is no such thing as to young or to old for Chiropractic care. Chiropractic patients range in years from birth to old age. Regardless of age, vertebrae can become misaligned. If a vertebrae become misaligned it can cause pressure or irritation to nerves thus causing them to malfunction. This process is known as a "Subluxation". For example, the birth process may cause trauma to the neck and spine. If left uncorrected, the vertebral subluxation may disturb the delicate spinal cord and nerves which control the infants muscles and organs. In some cases, an uncorrected subluxations may lead to a deformity of the spinal column. An early chiropractic checkup may detect subluxations while they are still easily correctable.

When should I start my child under Chiropractic care?

Your child should have a chiropractic examination as soon after birth as possible. Spinal trauma to an infant's or child's spine can occur during the birth process as well as from any number of tumbles while learning to sit up or walk. Your child's spine grows almost 50% in length during that first year (the equivalent of a six-footer growing to nine feet in just 12 months!). It's this kind of tremendous growth and developmental changes which make continued chiropractic examinations so important in the early stages of your child's life.
In Chiropractic we believe it's much more important to prevent diseases than wait till some illness occurs. Through regular adjustments, as well as awareness on proper diet, exercise and posture, Chiropractic can help you raise a child free of subluxations whose body is structurally and functionally sound. Your child will also learn good health habits at an early age which can be very beneficial to him or her as an adult.
Youngsters suffer numerous accidents and falls while learning to walk, riding a bike, or even while jumping or running around. But after their tears have dried, underlying injuries could go undetected-such as a subluxation during the spine's most formative period.
Regular Chiropractic spinal exams can provide corrective and preventive care for your son or daughter and peace of mind for you.
It is especially important to have your child under chiropractic care when your child takes part in athletic activities. The "sack" of a young quarterback could twist a young spine. A softball pitcher could throw a vertebra out of alignment. In Chiropractic we can do more than correct these problems, we can also help improve performance on and off the field by helping the body function at its optimum level, naturally without stress and without drugs.

How effective is chiropractic care for children?

Doctors of Chiropractic have been providing safe and effective care or children for nearly 100 years. There are several published studies conducted by researchers in Germany, Australia, Denmark and the United States which confirm the effectiveness of chiropractic for a variety of childhood illnesses. The scientific evidence is growing every day.

Cancer Patients Quality of Life Improved With Chiropractic

Many people suffering from cancer are looking for a way to ease the pain and discomfort have found help with Chiropractic care.  Check out this article to see how it can help you!

An article published in the January 2001 issue of the Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics follows two case studies of patients with various types of serious cancer. The article follows the chiropractic care and it's effect on these patients pain and quality of life.

Gastric cancer cells in ascites fluid The first patient was a 57-year-old man with serious terminal pancreatic cancer. This patient received chiropractic care during the later stages of the disease. In the remaining time the patient had before succumbing to the disease it was documented that the patient had significantly less pain and was able to reduce his medications. The journal article summed up this case by stating, "In this case chiropractic care was able to provide significant pain relief, reduce the amount of pain medication being taken (as well as the potential side effects), and temporarily improve the quality of life for a patient with terminal cancer."

The second patient was a 54-year-old man recovering from surgery for lung cancer. This patient was continually suffering from upper back pain and had gotten no relief for over one year. At that point the patient began chiropractic care. In this case the patient received immediate relief and was able to discontinue all pain medication after two chiropractic visits.

The principles of chiropractic make it plain that the focus of chiropractic care is not to directly treat the patient's pain but rather to assist the body and allow the body's own healing abilities to work at that person's maximum potential. These case studies show that ability and the effect on people suffering with serious conditions. The Journal article states it best when it said, "These clinical examples offer 2 specific instances of how chiropractic may improve the quality of a cancer patient's life."

Brain, Your Amazing Brain

In the Science Times section of the October of 1998 New York Times come an article that also discusses the effect placebos have on healing. The article discusses the ability of someone's belief in healing to cause healing. According to the article scientists are now starting to understand some of the brain functions that may explain some of the results gotten from placebo treatments. Many drugs that are eventually shown to be ineffective can attribute their original success to the placebo effect.

The Times article goes on to talk about a study in Texas where a group of patients with similar knee problems underwent three types of surgical care. One group had their knee joints scraped, one group had the knee joint washed, and one group had incisions made to look like the other procedures but nothing else was done. Amazingly two years later, the group that got nothing (but believed they had surgery) had the same pain relief as did those who actually had surgery.

From a chiropractic standpoint, the placebo effect can be simply explained. Placebos only work because people believe they are getting some form of real care, so they heal themselves. Fundamental to chiropractic is the premise that the body heals itself. Chiropractors depend on this self-healing ability for the results we see. For over 100 years chiropractors have understood that the body heals itself. We believe that what a doctor should do is remove any interference to that healing ability. In chiropractic, we recognize that the most common form of interference to the body's ability to heal itself is a spinal subluxation.

A subluxation is when one or more of the bones of your spine (vertebrae) move out of position and put pressure on or irritate spinal nerves. Spinal nerves are the nerves that come out from between each of the bones in your spine. This pressure or irritation on the nerves then causes those nerves to malfunction and interfere with the signals traveling over those nerves. The result of subluxation is a decrease in the body's ability to function properly and heal itself. By correcting subluxations, chiropractors allow the body's healing ability to function at a higher level and healing is the natural result.

Childhood Asthma & Chiropractic

The research just keeps proving the benefits of Chiropractic.  This article explains how Chiropractic helps kids with Asthma.

It is estimated that up to 15 million people suffer from asthma. Of those, 14.8 million are children under the age of 18. In 1993 alone, there were 198,000 hospitalizations for asthma. In that same sample year, 342 people under the age of 25 died due to this problem. In money terms, the direct cost of managing a patient with severe asthma has been estimated at more than $18,000 per year.

The following statistics about asthma come from the Better Health & Medical Network.
  • Asthma has increased 46% from 1982-1993 with an 80% growth in children under 18.
  • In the 5-17 age group, asthma causes an annual loss of more than 10 million school days per year.
  • Asthma accounts for more childhood hospitalizations than any other childhood disease.
  • Children with asthma spend approximately 7.3 million days per year restricted to bed rest.
  • In 1990, there were 7.1 million physician visits for asthma.
  • Health care costs for asthma were estimated to be $6.2 billion, which is almost 1% of the total US health care costs.
  • More than 5,200 Americans died from asthma in 1991.
Recent articles in publications such as "The American Chiropractor", and "Today's Chiropractic" describe strong links between people who suffer from these conditions and nerve interference from subluxation. Subluxations are when bones in the spine pressure or irritate nerves causing abnormal nerve function. An article appearing in the Journal of Vertebral Subluxation Research Vol. 1 No. 4, also demonstrated the positive effects of chiropractic care on 81 children with asthma.

According to Richard Pistolese, research assistant for the International Chiropractic Pediatric Association, "Based upon information currently available, chiropractic care represents a safe non-pharmacological health care approach, that may be associated with a decrease in asthma-related impairment, reduced respiratory effort, and a decrease incidence of asthma attacks." Pistolese goes further to say, "The correction of vertebral subluxation is a non-invasive procedure, which could reduce or eliminate the need for medication, and potentially ease the severity of the asthmatic condition."

Adjusting to Pregnancy

Hey Ladies, want to make that child birth a little easier and quicker, check this article!

The above is the actual headline from the August 7, 2007 Milford Daily News in Massachusetts. This article addresses the benefits of chiropractic care in pregnancy. The article starts by following the story of one chiropractic patient, Amanda Giampaoli-Martinez, who was receiving chiropractic care throughout her pregnancy. The story notes that when Amanda was ready to give birth she called her chiropractor Dr. Maryam Ahsan, to be present at the birth.

It was not two minutes after the birth of Amanda's new baby girl, Arianna, that she was checked by Dr. Maryam. New mother Amanda recalled the activity by stating, "Dr. Maryam was driving when I called her and asked if she could come to the hospital. She just turned her car around." Giampaoli-Martinez continued, "When I was having bad pain, (Dr. Ahsan) put me on my side and adjusted me while I was on the table." Ms. Giampaoli-Martinez was pleased with her results and noted, "I went three times a week, and after a month my back pain was gone. I was also having shooting leg pain and the hip alignment helped to take that away."

The article explains that the International Chiropractic Pediatric Association teaches a technique named after the associations late founder Dr. Larry Webster, called the Webster Technique. The article explains that the Webster Technique decreases intrauterine constraint, resulting in a quicker, less difficult delivery. This technique became prominent after it was discovered that certain adjustments had a high success rate in reversing the position of breech babies.

Dr. Jeanne Ohm, executive director of the International Chiropractic Pediatric Association, explained the procedure, "There is no deep tissue massage with this technique. It's a really light force," she said. "Chiropractors will check the woman's sacrum (pelvis bone) and press on different areas to restore balance. They (patients) turn her on her back and check her belly and a round ligament for tightness." Dr. Ohm continued, "There are no known contraindications or complications to the adjustments. No one's ever called back to report a problem, and I would definitely be the first to know. Osteopathic studies have shown the adjustments reduce labor time and fight dystocia (abnormal or overly long childbirth)."

The article also interviewed Dr. David Bilstrom, a board certified physical medicine and rehabilitation specialist, and director of Oasis Center for Health in Hinsdale. He feels that most medical doctors are unfamiliar with chiropractic care. He states, "Chiropractic care tends to be quite safe. In the right hands, I would feel very comfortable seeing the treatment done."

Abnormal Sleeping Patterns Helped With Chiropractic

Trouble sleeping? Check out this article about how Chiropractic can help.

A case study published in the July 2006 issue of the peer-reviewed, scientific publication, the Journal of Clinical Chiropractic Pediatrics (JCCP) documented the effects of chiropractic care on a nine month old infant girl with a history of disturbed sleep. The JCCP is the official publication of the Council on Chiropractic Pediatrics of the International Chiropractors Association.
The study article starts off by noting that the average 9 month old should sleep approximately 14 hours per day. In this case study a nine month old infant girl was presented for chiropractic care with a history of severely disrupted sleep and fussiness. Additionally, the infant was refusing to breastfeed on one side and exhibited, what was called a generally unsettled behavior. It was also noted that the child would not turn her head to the left. These problems had been occurring since birth.
The examination confirmed a reduced range of neck motion to the left and significant muscle tension in the left and upper neck. Upon touching the neck the child exhibited signs of being in pain by crying and moving away. It was determined that subluxations were present, and an appropriate course of adjustments was initiated.
The results in this case were very impressive. The study noted that on the afternoon after the infants first adjustment the baby girl fell asleep for 5 hours. This was followed by nighttime sleep of 2 periods of 6 hours each. Over the next three weeks of care the daytime sleep got shorter, but the nighttime sleep remained between 6 and 8 hours.
In addition to the dramatic sleep improvement, the child also improved her range of neck motion and was able to turn her head to the left in response to sound on the left side. Additionally the infant began to feed freely and comfortably.
In their conclusion, the authors of the case study noted that the dramatic improvements after just one adjustment indicated that the vertebral subluxation found in this case was at least in part responsible for the disrupted sleep pattern.
