Chiropractic Care and Pregnancy

Can Chiropractic Help with Pregnancy?

The answer is Yes – in fact, more and more
pregnant women are turning to chiropractors
to help them be more comfortable during their
pregnancy.

A pregnant woman’s body undergoes many
changes as the baby she’s carrying grows and
develops.

Because of this added weight and
stress, it’s not uncommon for an expectant
mother to suffer from spinal misalignment due to the enlarged abdomen, changes in posture and the pelvic region.

Because of these changes, many pregnant women will develop chronic lower back pain throughout their pregnancy.

Most chiropractors are trained in how to treat a pregnant woman so the entire process is generally safe. In fact, some obstetricians will encourage a woman who is getting close to her delivery date to see a chiropractor because it will benefit them in a variety of ways such as:

  • It helps provide an overall healthier pregnancy
  • It helps relieve the pain experienced in the back, neck and joints
  • It helps reduce the need for a caesarean section
  • It helps with pain management during labor and delivery

Another point to consider when deciding if you want to see a chiropractor during your pregnancy is that the when the body undergoes a stressful or traumatic situation as it does in child birth, it can lose its balance and ability to cope in certain situations. For example, woman who need to undergo a caesarean section often need to do so because of the body’s inability to deal with the stress put on the body by delivery.

The need for a caesarean also comes from the misalignment of the pelvic area which can slow down the fetus’ journey into the birth canal. A visit to your chiropractor can help with this misalignment and thus possibly prevent the need for a further invasive procedure.

As you can see, even during pregnancy, your chiropractor can help with different areas to help your pregnancy progress without incident.

New Chiropractic and Radicular Pain Study

A short, 3 month trial of care led to significant improvements in all those individuals, and this improvement was sustained 3 months after care ceased.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to investigate outcomes of patients with cervical radiculopathy from cervical disk herniation (CDH) who are treated with spinal manipulative therapy.

METHODS: Adult Swiss patients with neck pain and dermatomal arm pain; sensory, motor, or reflex changes corresponding to the involved nerve root; and at least 1 positive orthopaedic test for cervical radiculopathy were included. Magnetic resonance imaging-confirmed CDH linked with symptoms was required. Baseline data included 2 pain numeric rating scales (NRSs), for neck and arm, and the Neck Disability Index (NDI). At 2 weeks, 1 month, and 3 months after initial consultation, patients were contacted by telephone, and the NDI, NRSs, and patient’s global impression of change data were collected. High-velocity, low-amplitude spinal manipulations were administered by experienced doctors of chiropractic. The proportion of patients responding “better” or “much better” on the patient’s global impression of change scale was calculated. Pretreatment and posttreatment NRSs and NDIs were compared using the Wilcoxon test. Acute vs subacute/chronic patients’ NRSs and NDIs were compared using the Mann-Whitney U test.

RESULTS: Fifty patients were included. At 2 weeks, 55.3% were “improved,” 68.9% at 1 month and 85.7% at 3 months. Statistically significant decreases in neck pain, arm pain, and NDI scores were noted at 1 and 3 months compared with baseline scores (P < .0001). Of the subacute/chronic patients, 76.2% were improved at 3 months.

CONCLUSIONS: Most patients in this study, including subacute/chronic patients, with symptomatic magnetic resonance imaging-confirmed CDH treated with spinal manipulative therapy, reported significant improvement with no adverse events.
This newly published prospective cohort study with 3-Month follow-up reports on the outcomes of 50 patients with MRI-confirmed cervical disc herniation who were also experiencing radiculopathy. Some of them were acute cases, but many of them happened to be chronic pain patients.

Incidence of Lifetime Pain after a Whiplash ... A Clinical Study

The objective of this population-based cohort study was to investigate the association between a lifetime history of neck injury from a motor vehicle collision and the development of troublesome neck pain. The current evidence suggests that individuals with a history of neck injury in a traffic collision are more likely to experience future neck pain. However, these results may suffer from residual confounding. Therefore, there is a need to test this association in a large population-based cohort with adequate control of known confounders. We formed a cohort of 919 randomly sampled Saskatchewan adults with no or mild neck pain in September 1995. At baseline, participants were asked if they ever injured their neck in a motor vehicle collision. Six and twelve months later, we asked about the presence of troublesome neck pain (grade II–IV) on the chronic pain grade questionnaire. Multivariable Cox regression was used to estimate the association between a lifetime history of neck injury in a motor vehicle collision and the onset of troublesome neck pain while controlling for known confounders. The follow-up rate was 73.5% (676/919) at 6 months and 63.1% (580/919) at 1 year. We found a positive association between a history of neck injury in a motor vehicle collision and the onset of troublesome neck pain after controlling for bodily pain and body mass index (adjusted HRR = 2.14; 95% CI 1.12–4.10). Our analysis suggests that a history of neck injury in a motor vehicle collision is a risk factor for developing future troublesome neck pain. The consequences of a neck injury in a motor vehicle collision can have long lasting effects and predispose individuals to experience recurrent episodes of neck pain.

Thank You ...from Bode Chiropractic

To gain the respect of others we must first learn to respect ourselves. The world is just a reflection of us. If you spread bad energy into the world as you go though out the day, bad energy will return to you in kind. However, in this universe if one principle is true, then the opposite is also true. Therefore by spreading exceedingly great energy (love), this is what the world will give in return. And most ironically, what we receive is almost always equal to what we give out. Meaning if you give a little love to the world you get a little love in return. To all of our patients here at Bode Chiropractic I hope that you have felt an appreciated the love we try to show to each and everyone of you. We are blessed to have the opportunity to care for you and your families. This is a privilege that I will always cherish and be grateful for. For those of you that have trusted in our care enough to refer friends family and especially your children, I am truly humbled, and would like to say from all of us at Bode Chiropractic ... Thank You

Can Drugs Fix Everything? Or Anything?

The practice of medicine today by the MD's has evolved over the years. No longer are the days when a doctor would listen to your symptoms and then explain what must be done to heal the patient. It has been found that treatment is much mor...e profitable than cure. This is why we now have a billion dollar drug industry that has a drug for every symptom known to man. However, treating symptoms complicates the condition. No problem for drug industry, to them, its a great opportunity to give you another drug for another symptom. (and the cycle continues). The practice of medicine today is basically one big chemistry experiment. Try one concoction after another and see what happens. Well the answer is starring us right in the face. 1.) America will spend 2.5 Trillion on healthcare and we are 38th in world health. 2.) 3 leading cause of death in teenagers is prescription medication. 3.)Dramatic Increase in drug resistant bacteria (MERSA, TB, etc.) due to over utilization of antibiotics. 4.) Of all the drugs manufactured in the world, the United States consumes 80% of them, If this was the answer, why are we not the most health nation in the world?
It is becoming more and more clear that this paradigm of healing is not the answer. Healing of the human body comes from the inherent recuperative powers within, not a drug from the outside. The manipulation of the internal chemistry to try to achieve some type of symptom relief will ultimately result in more problems to fix. Clearing the spine of Subluxation (i.e. neurological irritation) will never result in side effects. Call today to get your spine checked for subluxation and ensure a healthy tomorrow.
